Brakspear’s poetry is like spindrift from a beautiful yet perilous shoreline: things look gorgeous from this littoral vantage, but the breeze is always silted with toxins. Things have to be this way, of course. For there is a species-chafing from way back, and you will recognise it in the mnemic openings of this language—the “syllabic dehiscence”, the “fricative unbalm-/ing”. Wipe off the film and peer hard into the numinous. The opalescent grit of Cabaret sticks in the eye and heart.
